Anthropic launches Claude Duet: no extra fee, but it spends your usage limits

Published · Announced 21 October 2026

On 21 October 2026 Anthropic opened a waitlisted research preview of Claude Duet, a standalone agent app for professionals and small-business owners, starting with Pro and Max subscribers in the US.[1]

What it is

Anthropic describes Duet as an app where Claude works as a proactive agent: it surfaces what needs your attention, completes tasks you ask of it, keeps working when you step away and checks with you before acting on your behalf.[1] It sends a daily brief, monitors connected apps and handles tasks ranging from scheduling meetings to building dashboards, financial forecasts and web apps.[4][5] It is built on Claude Opus 5.5 and runs on its own cloud-based computer, so work continues after the app is closed.[3] It is available on iOS, Android and claude.ai.[1]

Reuters reports Duet can use more than 6,000 connectors in the Claude Marketplace, including Gmail and Slack, and can make purchases through Stripe’s Link wallet and Shopify’s Shop Pay, with user approval required for sensitive actions.[5]

What it costs

During the preview, Duet is included in Pro and Max plans at no additional cost.[3] The catch for budget-watchers: it shares your plan’s usage limits with the rest of Claude, its background checks count toward those limits, and larger tasks such as building a financial model or a deck take more model turns.[1] 9to5Mac notes this could mean hitting limits “sooner than with chat alone.”[3] Duet is not yet available on Team or Enterprise plans.[3]

Limits Anthropic acknowledges

Anthropic calls this an early version that “might misread a thread or miscalibrate what’s urgent,” says personal errands such as booking tickets are weaker, and notes Duet cannot yet show you its browser. For now it lives in its own app, separate from the main Claude app.[1]

Context

Coverage positions Duet against OpenAI’s Dots and Meta’s Muse agents.[2][4]

Our take

Duet adds no line item to the price, so it will not show up as a price change in our tracker. Its cost lands in usage: if you already run close to your Pro or Max limits, an always-on agent is the thing most likely to push you over. We will track Anthropic’s plan pages for any change in limits or pricing when the preview ends.
